An Introduction to this Sustainable Building Material
In the world of sustainable construction, one may find themselves asking, “What is hempcrete?”
The more important question to ask is “Why hempcrete?” In this article, we will discuss just that.
Imagine a building material that not only has amazing insulating performance but also, significantly improves the health of our homes.
This is the magic of hempcrete, a biological material that is forging new frontiers in eco-friendly, and health conscious homes and house building.
At the heart of hempcrete lies the amalgamation of two elements: hemp shivs (or hurds), derived from the woody core of the hemp plant, and a lime-based binder.
The hemp plant, with its rapid growth and carbon sequestration capability, means that hempcrete is a highly sustainable alternative to conventional concrete products.
Why is hempcrete a better choice?
With its remarkable insulating properties, hempcrete provides exceptional thermal performance, aiding in energy efficiency for any home or building.
It’s not merely a material; it’s an investment in a home’s longevity and environmental stewardship.
The combination of hemp, lime, and water results in a material that is simultaneously strong and lightweight.
Leveraging these advantages, an ordinary home becomes a sanctuary sculpted from the earth’s own resources.
The Hempcrete Miracle:
Non-toxic • ZERO off-gassing • No synthetic additives • Mold resistant • Controls Humidity •
Strong and Durable • Sustainable and Renewable • Carbon sequestrating •
Fireproof and pest resistance • Passive self regulation of temperature and humidity •
GREAT insulator
The use of hempcrete in construction signals a seismic shift towards more sustainable materials in the building industry.
Conventional materials that are almost always produced with carbon-intensive production processes and contain toxic byproducts that are very harmful to our health when exposed over long periods of time.
Hempcrete, however, offers a breath of fresh air for those concerned with the toxicity of traditional homes.
Its eco-friendly nature is complemented by a resiliency that stands the test of time.
Lime, an ancient material in construction, provides hempcrete with its natural ability to regulate humidity, creating a balanced and comfortable indoor climate.
This synergy enhances the overall performance of a house, transforming it into a harmonious ecosystem.
What sets hempcrete apart from traditional concrete is its capacity for capturing carbon during its growth and in its application within buildings.
It’s a feat that not only provides a viable solution for a healthy and non-toxic home, but also propels us towards a more sustainable future.
The efficacy of hempcrete is evident not only in its application but also in its lifecycle.
From the field to the final construct, this material requires lower energy inputs and reduces emissions and harmful waste products into the environment.
As builders and innovators, our purpose transcends mere construction; it’s about advancing a philosophy where every home is a pledge to our Earth’s sustainability.
Envision constructing your next house with materials that contribute to a healthier home.
Geodomestic stands at the forefront of this revolution, integrating hempcrete’s astonishing qualities into the creation of impeccable domes.
The future of construction is not about grand facades that ignore our health, but rather, authentic manifestations of care for our world and its inhabitants.
With hempcrete entering the construction industry and Geodomestic’s visionary application, we’re on our way to erecting structures that are not merely residences—they are benchmarks of a sustainable, conscientious lifestyle.
Let’s build a future where homes are havens, and eco-friendly is the standard.
After all, isn’t that the hallmark of true progress?
Hempcrete Dome Construction: Revolutionizing Eco-logical Design
As an inventor and builder at the forefront of sustainable architecture, I’ve seen the rise of hempcrete in the building industry.
In fact, I built the very first tiny house on wheels using hempcrete in it’s walls. It began as an experiment to test its viability.
After a successful completion, I lived in the house for a number of years and then rented the house to a friend.
After six years of sitting in the rainy Pacific Northwest, I changed the siding and examined the interior hempcrete.
Low and behold, the hempcrete was completely free of mold and held together stronger than the day it was poured.
This was my introduction to the world of “hemptitecture” which sparked the idea to use the same technology applied to the geodesic dome.
In building, especially dome construction, the use of hempcrete manifests remarkable benefits.
The dome shape, synonymous with strength and resilience, paired with hempcrete’s thermal, mold resistant, fireproof, non-toxic and carbon sequestering properties, leads to buildings with optimal energy performance and conscientious living.
Domes have been an ingenious design element throughout history.
At Geodomestic, we’re taking this to the next level by integrating hempcrete’s properties into the our structures.
The allure of the hempcrete “biodome” rests in its harmonious blend of ancient wisdom and modern technology, culminating in buildings that offer a sanctuary of wellness.
The future of construction must embrace these innovative solutions, and at Geodomestic, we’re at the helm, pioneering the use of hemp in structures that don’t just stand the test of time but also promote a healthier relationship with our planet.
The performance of a hempcrete dome is not only remarkable in terms of energy efficiency; it represents a significant leap in the construction industry, where the demand for sustainable materials is at an all-time high.
With each hempcrete-based project, we’re not just building houses; we’re creating legacies of sustainability.
Our aim is to revolutionize construction with eco-friendly, hemp-based products that are as good for the earth as they are for the people who call our structures home
The Building Process with Hempcrete
As mentioned, hempcrete is a blend of hemp shivs and lime.
This simple mixture has transformed the building process by offering an unparalleled balance of durability and environmental conscientiousness.
Now, merging the wisdom of this age-old material with cutting-edge design, we are pioneering the construction of hempcrete geodesic domes.
Our process begins with the careful selection of high-quality hemp, sourced from the US and Canada, and a specially formulated lime binder.
With the appropriate mixture of these two products along with water, the lime coats the hemp hurd and begins to calcify and turns the hemp hurd into a stone-like material that is fraction of the weight of concrete.
Hempcrete’s impact on construction doesn’t stop at performance; it extends into the essence of our buildings.
As we look towards a horizon, dotted with Geodomestic’s hempcrete biodomes, we’re reminded of both the responsibility and the opportunity we have to influence the world through construction.
Each dome we raise encapsulates our process, philosophy, and hope for a future where every building is a beacon of sustainable choices and innovative materials.
So, as you consider the materials for your next construction project, think not just about the house or home you want to create but the legacy you wish to build with your own hands.
When you choose to join us on this journey towards a healthy and sustainable future, you’re not merely selecting a living space—you’re embracing a philosophy where design meets a true human need, where materials reflect a commitment to the earth, creating a home that is not only a place of residence but a dwelling that radiates positive impacts far beyond its walls.
At Geodomestic, the future isn’t a distant dream; it’s on the horizon, and it’s crafted with hempcrete, and brought to life by innovative design solutions that continue to redefine buildings, homes, and the very essence of what it means to build a conscious house in an age of transformation.
